AN 11-year-old boy from Bewdley is set to represent Worcestershire and his school in the final stages of a national chess competition for a fifth year in a row.

Cameron Henry has qualified again for the national junior chess Gigafinal after securing five out of six wins in the recent qualifying Megafinal.

Chess ace Cameron, who is a pupil at Kings Hawford School in Worcester, secured the points needed to qualify for the Gigafinals later this month and if successful he will have the chance to go through to the showpiece Terrafinal this autumn for the second time.

Jennie Phillips, headteacher at Kings Hawford said: “We are all massively proud of Cameron’s chess achievements.

"He is amongst the country’s strongest junior chess players and to make it to the Gigafinal for the past five years is testament to his commitment and ability.

“We are excited that Cameron will once again be representing not just our school, but his home town and also the whole of Worcestershire.”

Last February Cameron, who is the youngest member of Kidderminster Chess Club, trialled for the England Junior Chess Squad, but the trials were cut short due to the Covid pandemic.

In 2020 Cameron became the first ever pupil in history from his school to qualify for the national elite Terrafinal where he came up against the very best junior chess players in the UK.

The Megafinal tournament took place online this year again due to Covid-19 restrictions.
