A TERMINALLY ill dad who was arrested for mooning at a speed camera believes graffiti artist Banksy is behind a mysterious new mural which has appeared in Kidderminster.

Darrell Meekcom, aged 55, received an anonymous tip-off about the art installation earlier in the week, which was painted in his honour.

The artwork depicts TV icon Bart Simpson mooning at police officers and is located on a wall across the canal near the Watermill pub in Park Lane.

The former lecturer, who has terminal multiple system atrophy and Parkinson's Disease, was recently arrested at his home for indecent exposure by six police officers after he bared his bum at a speed camera on Stourbridge Road in Kidderminster.

Mr Meekcom says the act of mooning at a speed camera was on his bucket list and something he'd always wanted to do.

Following his antics, police pulled up outside his home on Coley Close to arrest him. His wife and carer Sarah filmed officers wrestling him to the ground in his garden and cuffing him. Footage of the incident went viral last week.

But now, Darrell and his family have found amusement from the artwork and has praised the mysterious artist for their ‘tongue and cheek’ mural.

Darrell said: “I had a message from an account last week, saying they were representing an anonymous international street artist.

“We discussed what happened with the police and they said they wanted to do a piece on it.

“I was shocked and didn’t think it was real. I thought nothing of it.

“Then I got another message on Wednesday asking if I was still interested – I said yes."

Inspired by the original story, the artist told Darrell that the police were purposely painted in black to represent the ‘disproportionate use of force’ and the ‘dark and oppressive nature of the police’, while Bart Simpson was depicted as ‘cheeky, comical and playful’.

Reacting to the mural, Mr Meekcom added: "I was speechless.

"From a personal point of view it's a lovely piece of work and by someone who understands.

"I know full well it's a Banksy. It's the sort of thing he'd do. It's in his vein of doing things.

"It's a beautiful bit of artwork."

Mr Meekcom is concerned that the artwork may get vandalised and wants it to be protected.

Following the incident, local Area Commander, Superintendent Mark Colquhoun, said: “We appreciate the footage and commentary circulating around the incident has caused some concern.

“The incident was reviewed at the time and, after consideration of the full facts and circumstances, including reviewing officers' body worn video, I am satisfied that appropriate action was taken by officers.

"The incident lasted around 38 minutes from the time of arrival at the address and therefore lasted significantly longer than the footage already in the media.

“The criminal investigation is ongoing and a complaint has been made to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC), therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further."

Police said a 55-year-old man from Kidderminster was arrested during the incident and has since been released on bail.
