THE brother of Kidderminster cancer fighter Megan Smith is honouring her memory by pursuing a career in oncology.

Peter Smith, aged 25, has been offered a position as a cancer pathway coordinator at the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

Mr Smith, known by many as Peej, supported Megan as she travelled to American to receive pioneering treatment for a rare form of rectal cancer.

On September 16, Megan died at the age of 27 in San Diego with her parents and brother by her side.

Mr Smith, who played professional football for eight years, announced the career shift on Facebook.

In the post he said: "Megan Smith always wanted me to purse a career in oncology, I promised her during the last few days of her life that I would go for it and make her proud.

"It’s taken me three months to get the opportunity.

"The first person I wanted to ring and tell was Megan, my heart is broken in two since you left us, but today is a happy emotional day as I know you would be so proud."

“What we went through with Megan was a journey in itself. It was a pleasure to be a part of her journey.

“Even if I can help one or two people, Megan would be proud of that. I really want to make a difference and give people the best opportunity.

“I owe all of this to her. All I want to do is try and make her proud and have her name live on.”

In October, hundreds attended a funeral for Megan in Kidderminster to celebrate her life and bid her a final farewell.
