Madam,
Your article “Disability rulings reversed at tribunals” (March 24) was of particular interest to me because my wife, who is a wheelchair user, was one of the hundreds of Wyre Forest residents who successfully took the government to tribunal after having her disability benefit cut.
She was fortunate in that I have legal training and was able to help her fight her case, but there are many others who have not been able to find such assistance, especially with government cuts hitting Citizens Advice Bureaux etc.
Even though my wife eventually won her case, the whole process took a year, during which she suffered considerable stress and anxiety because of losing her benefit and not knowing whether or not it would be restored.
I’m sure this has been the same for all those who have gone to tribunal and even worse for the very many others who have been forced to suffer the cuts because they have been unable to face the stress and complication of the appeals process.
When Personal Independence Payment took the place of Disability Living Allowance, it was heralded by the government as being a better way of assessing the needs of people with disabilities.
In my opinion, however, it was a cynical ploy to enable the taking away of benefits from those who had been awarded them for life under DLA.
The whole process has been nothing less than a vicious attack by the Tory government on people with disabilities, whom they view with disdain as not being able to work to make a profit for big business and for whom the rich have to be taxed to pay for benefits.
In 2020, an article in the London Economic claimed that: “More than 100,000 people have died following social security cuts, while around 120,000 perished due to reductions in health and social spending”.
Time we had a government that was focused on giving care and protection to the sick and vulnerable rather than sacrificing them on the altar of profit.
