UNCERTAINTY surrounds a Stourport councillor who previously said he would resign after posting Islamophobic tweets.

Former Stourport Mayor Gary Talbot was suspended from the Wyre Forest Conservatives after past tweets were shared on Twitter, one describing Islam as the "enemy within England."

The 60-year-old, a retired postman, deleted his social media accounts after the comments drew criticism on Twitter.

However, despite telling the Shuttle he would be resigning as a councillor, Stourport Town Council has said it hasn't received a letter of resignation.

Last week, Mr Talbot said: "I'm resigning because that's the decent thing to do.

"I'm not Islamophobic - I can get on with everybody.

"I moved myself into a situation where I made one or two silly comments.

"I'm paying the penalty for it".

He apologised to those who may be offended by the tweets, which have been branded racist by West Mercia Police.

In one Tweet, Mr Talbot said: "Islam is the enemy within England, and it will have to be defeated from within by England, by the English."

Another said: "Now that we've seen off Europe, it's time to see off Islam and re-establish Great Britain's laws, religions, customs and history."

Officers have confirmed they are currently investigating the comments.
Mr Talbot is yet to respond to requests for clarification despite attempts made by The Shuttle.
