A KIDDERMINSTER resident has shared her shock of waking up to loud alarms and huge flames after a blaze broke out at a flat.

The kitchen of a flat at Rowland Hill House on Blackwell Street caught fire in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with residents quickly evacuating.

Two people sustained injuries, but these are believed to be minor.

Rebecca Blatchford, aged 34, has lived in one of the apartments in the building with her partner for around a year.

She said: “The alarm was going off and it was really loud. We had to throw some clothes on and get out of the building.

“We could smell the fire from where we were.

“When we were outside we could see the flames coming outside the front of the building. It was out the car park side as well.

“We were trying to make a lot of noise to wake everybody up and get everybody out.

“To wake up to the alarms going and to see fire coming out of the building was a little bit of a shock.

“It’s not something you expect to happen at that time in the morning”.

She said the alarms in the building didn’t stop until around 6 am in the morning.

She also praised the fire service for its swift response.

“They reacted really fast and if they hadn’t done, the whole building could have gone up,” she added.

Fire crews from Wyre Forest, Bromsgrove and Hereford rushed to the scene of the fire to extinguish the flames.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 1.41am to reports of a fire on Blackwell Street, Kidderminster. Two paramedic officers attended. Upon arrival we found two patients. Both were assessed and had sustained injuries believed to be minor.

“They received self-care advice and were discharged at the scene.”
