An illegal encampment has been set up at Cherry Tree Park in Claines, just off of Ombsersley Road.

Several caravans have set up camp on a field between two housing developments.

Police have visited the site to speak to the travellers.

A spokesperson at Gwilliam's Farm Shop, which is situated next to the encampment, said: "The police came at about 9 am, a lady who came into the shop told me that she had seen them.

"They're not on our land but we've closed our gates because otherwise we think that they would probably set up on our land here because it's right next door."

A dog walker who lives in the housing next to the encampment said: "This is private land, we pay a maintenance fee every year.

"I'm not thrilled about it but they have children and someone said they had spoken to them and apparently they are only planning to be here for two or three days.

"If this is a safe haven for their children and a break from travelling 24/7 then for two or three days a year out of the 365 that we live here then that's ok.

"I don't want it to become a regular occurrence though.

"My mother-in-law lives in one of the houses opposite and she's terrified to leave her house at the minute.

"At the end of the day, we pay maintenance fees on that land so that our kids can use it and play in the park so we really don't want this to be a regular thing."

Another dog walker agreed, they added: "As long as they aren't stealing or going in anyone's gardens, I don't mind for one or two days.

"I've seen a big pile of rubbish though and I do think just put it in the bin, I really hope they don't leave a mess behind.

"I've lived here for three years and this has never happened before, I hope it doesn't become a regular place to stop."
