A PLAN has been lodged to convert a Kidderminster hotel currently being used to house asylum seekers into new flats.

A planning application has been submitted to change the use of the Gainsborough House Hotel, with hopes to convert it into thirty-three self-contained flats.

In March this year, Wyre Forest District Council announced the hotel on Bewdley Hill would be used by the Home Office to house asylum seekers.

The new plan looks to alter the interior of the building and will not affect the exterior of the property.

The planning statement highlights that the proposals are "driven to a great extent by the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the hotel trade."

It said: "This has made the viability of the hotel debatable and it has been marketed unsuccessfully as a going concern.

"This proposed new use is hoped to remedy the situation in finding an alternative use for the premises in order to ensure the long-term future of the listed building".
