MP Mark Garnier says he is "relieved" following Liz Truss's resignation as Prime Minister and has revealed who he would like to see become the new Conservative leader.

Announcing her resignation this afternoon (Thursday, October 20) after a month and a half in power, the Prime Minister said: "I recognise I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.

"I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party. There will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week.

"I will remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen."

Her resignation comes after weeks of chaos following a disastrous mini-budget which plunged the economy into turmoil.

The MP for Wyre Forest said he is "relieved" that this "very bad" period of governance is now "over".

"We need to get behind a unity Prime Minister and actually get on with running the country properly," Mr Garnier told The Shuttle.

"Households are desperately worried about their finances. We need a grown-up government.

"This has to be done really quickly".

Mr Garnier added that he would favour either Rishi Sunak, or Penny Mordaunt to succeed Liz Truss as Prime Minister.

He also included Jeremy Hunt on his list, but Mr Hunt has since ruled himself out of the leadership race.

Mr Garnier backed Rishi Sunak in the previous leadership contest.
