PICTURES show a temporary flood barrier is holding back water in Beales Corner, Bewdley, as River Severn levels continue to rise.

The barrier is doing its job today (Saturday January 14) with the Environment Agency monitoring the situation.

Barry Killner of the Environment Agency tweeted: "Beales Corner temporary barrier in Stourport Road, Bewdley this morning now holding water back, teams on the ground monitoring."

Meanwhile on Severnside the barrier levels are being raised.

Mr Killner tweeted: "Severnside Demountable barrier Phase 3 going up today ahead of expected peaks in #Bewdley."

The River Severn at Bewdley was at 4.76 metres at 9.15am this morning (Saturday) and is expected to rise to 5metres at 8am tomorrow (January 15).

Last year the town saw extensive flooding for the third year in a row despite the efforts of the temporary flood barriers to control the water.

There is the hope the issue could be resolved in the future, with the EA putting forward official plans to Wyre Forest District Council for permanent flood barriers.

A planning application was lodged last December.

A planning statement said the EA will start the scheme, which will take between 12 to 18 months, during the summer or autumn this year, if it is backed by planners.
