Passengers are facing disruption on the railways as the latest wave of stikes hit public transport.

Industrial action by the Aslef and the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) unions means some services will not operate.

Passengers are being advised to check with train copanies and expect busier busses and Metro services.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the RMT says the latest pay offer from bosses is 'really poor' and way below the rate of inflation.

However Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he does not think it right that “there is so much disruption” being caused by industrial action as he defended his administration’s anti-strikes legislation.

The Prime Minister, speaking to Sky News while in San Diego, US, said: “I don’t think it’s right that there’s so much disruption being caused to working families’ lives.

“That’s why I, as Prime Minister, introduced new laws to have minimum safety levels in our critical public services like rail, like education, like healthcare."

Up to three in five train services are cancelled because of a fresh strike by rail workers as a wave of industrial action continues to spread across the country.

Teachers in England and university staff are also on strike in a continuation of a walkout on Wednesday, when they took part in one of the single biggest days of action in a decade.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) at 14 train operating companies are striking on Thursday in a long-running row over pay, jobs and conditions. Trains started later than normal, at about 7.30am, and will finish earlier than usual at around 6.30pm.

Across Britain, between 40-50% of train services are expected to run, but there will be wide variations across the network, with no services at all in some areas.

Services on Friday morning may also be disrupted because much of the rolling stock will not be at the right depots.
