A NEW Sainsbury's Local is now open at the former fire station site in Bewdley.

More than 20 new jobs have been created at the new Dog Lane convenience store, which is open seven days a week from 7am to 11pm.

Bewdley Mayor Councillor Rod Stanczyszyn cut the ribbon to celebrate the store’s opening on Friday (April 21).

The store offers fresh bread and pastries, food-to-go, fruit and veg, ready meals, savoury snacks and confectionery.

There will also be a Costa Coffee machine so customers can pick up a hot drink on the move.

The store colleagues will play an active role in Bewdley by establishing links with nearby food donation charities via its partnership with Neighbourly to ensure surplus food from the store goes to those in the community who need it most.

Glyn Bailey, the manager of the new store, said: “We’re delighted to be able to welcome our new customers from today and we’re looking forward to playing our part in the local community.

"I’d like to thank everyone who has worked hard to help us get ready to open our fresh new Sainsbury’s store, enabling us to put our best foot forward for customers in Bewdley from the get-go.”

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s property director, said: “It’s always a pleasure to bring Sainsbury’s to a new town for the first time and I hope our customers in Bewdley enjoy the greater convenience and choice our store will offer.

"The new Local has been specifically designed and built to be in keeping with the local neighbourhood and we’re really pleased with the result.”

The old Dog Lane fire station was closed in 2020 following a lengthy battle by the Save Bewdley Fire Station Campaign. It was demolished to make way for the new shop and flats.

The fire crew in Bewdley moved to the emergency services hub on Stourport Road.
