POLICE have issued a warning after youths were spotted swimming in the river and canals in Stourport.

Youngsters are being warned of the risks of swimming in cold water despite hot weather conditions.

On West Mercia Police's Neighbourhood Matters page, PCSO Julie Garvey posted: "Stourport Safer Neighbourhood Team have received reports of youths swimming in the River and local canals in Stourport.

"This may seem very tempting due to the recent hot weather conditions, however, there are risks going into cold water.

"The shock of the cold water can make swimming difficult and increase the difficulty in getting out of the water

"The depth of the water- this changes and is unpredictable

"Underwater objects and hazards may not be visible

"Strong currents can rapidly sweep people away".

The Stourport Policing Team has an event coming up on Sunday, July 9 from 11am to 3pm at Riverside Meadows, Stourport to educate people about water safety.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, Midlands Air Ambulance, Severn Area Rescue Association and Fire Safety will be in attendance.
