Hartlebury Castle is hosting an event that dives deep into its history during the May Day bank holiday.

The Curiosities at the Castle event will take place on Monday, May 6.

Guests can explore previously unseen items and untold stories, paired with hands-on activities and short guided tours.

The exhibit will include furniture that isn’t what it seems and gifts with surprising histories.

Chantel Summerfield, operations manager, said: "There are many objects and curiosities tucked away or in storage at the Castle, and it's lovely to bring them out for the public to see."

“Sometimes it’s not the item itself, but the personal handwritten label, or the mystery behind how it came to Hartlebury that’s the interesting part. We’ve even made some new discoveries while deciding what to show.”

Families will have the opportunity to enjoy various activities and games as they join Really Rural for games and wildlife art, follow a historic photo trail around the grounds, and even meet Bessie, the Castle cook, who provides a unique insight into the life of a 1930s servant.

The event is supported by Dig Hartlebury which uncovers stories through site excavations.

Others contributing to the event include the Worcestershire & Herefordshire Branch of the Western Front Association, historian and author Doug Smith explaining the Castle’s role as a VAD hospital during the first World War, and Remember The Fallen exploring what it was like to be a nurse during this time.

Curiosities at the Castle will run from 11am to 4pm, with ticket prices including access to the whole site.

Adults pay £14.50, concessions are £12.50, children are charged £8.25 while a family pass costs £38.5.

Entry is free for under five-year-olds.
