Young people who have experienced homelessness have helped create designs for the hoardings around a construction site in Kidderminster.

The art project was organised by Wyre Forest District Council and its partners on the Castle Road development, which is set to create new short-term accommodation in the area.

It involved users of Wyre Forest and South Worcestershire NightStop charity as well as youngsters from Nova, a training provider in the town who were asked to illustrate what a home means to them.

The initiative is part of the social value activities programme linked to the Castle Road development which will provide temporary accommodation for people while the council works with them to secure a more permanent home.

Councillor Ian Hardiman, Wyre Forest District Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for housing, health and wellbeing said: “We all attach different meaning to ‘home’ but having a safe space was a theme which we saw in many of the drawings.

"Our Castle Road development will support individuals into permanent homes and create positive impacts within communities.

"This social value programme is already offering opportunities within the community. We are now looking forward to seeing the artwork in place."

The social activities programme is running throughout the build with partners set to work with local organisations to support education and skills development.

They will be focusing on the construction industry and highlighting the opportunities available.

The programme will also include helping ex-offenders back into work and assisting them with CV writing and interview techniques.

Patrick Hickey, Associate Direct at Hive Projects Ltd, which is one of the council’s partners, said: "By investing in these social value activities, Wyre Forest is not only building infrastructure but also building a stronger, more inclusive community.

"We are excited about the progress of the Castle Road development and the positive impact it will have on the local area."

Wyre Forest District Council is working with Stepnel and Hive Projects on the new facility which is due to open in spring 2025.

The foundations and the groundworks of the Castle Road development have been completed and the brickwork is underway.
