EIGHT martial artists from a Wyre Forest club will be heading overseas to a world championships in their sport.

The team from Young Gloves Karate, which meets in Kidderminster, secured 10 medals at the British Championships.

As a result, eight competitors have been chosen to represent England by the WKU (World Karate Union) for October’s World Open Karate Championships on a Greek island.

Shannon Phipps, Niamh Badger, Ethan Bishop, Steve Wentworth, Sam Hayes, Joshua Hayes, Elese Price and Alan Westwood will join karate aces from across the globe in Rhodes to showcase the best in martial arts.

Club head instructor sensei Justin Thomas, a fifth-dan black belt, said: “After an amazing 12 months where Team Young Gloves Karate have shared their fair few ups and downs they have reason to celebrate.

“This has been an incredible journey for the whole squad because without each and every member playing their part this would not be possible.

“Fresh from an amazing performance in the British Championships on May 5 where the club celebrated 10 medals, eight members have been chosen by WKU to fly to Greece in October to compete in the World Open Karate Championships 2024.

“The training, dedication, commitment and discipline to get this chance is truly remarkable and deserving. We have a lot of work to do between now and October.

“I know that each and every squad member, whether selected or not, will be in it together pushing each other forward towards success.

“This is the second time that the club has had students selected to represent their country which is a real honour.

“I really think this team is the best Young Gloves ever have produced and the friendships formed are second to none.

“On and off the mats they are all a real credit to themselves, family, Young Gloves and their country.

“To compete on this level is a life-changing experience and one that will be on everyone’s CV for life.

“Let’s go Young Gloves and bring it home!”

The club meets at Birchen Coppice School and Franche Primary School as well as in Stourbridge.
