STOURPORT is set to pay a final farewell to a “well-liked” former road sweeper known for his smile.
Robert Howes, who was a road sweeper for Stourport Town Council for 25 years during his working life, died of cancer on July 22 aged 84.
A funeral for Mr Howes, who was known as ‘Smiley Bob,’ will be held at Wyre Forest Crematorium on Wednesday, August 14, starting at 11.30am.
He has been described as a “popular character” and a “thoughtful” man by his family.
Paying tribute, his sister-in-law Maureen Howes, aged 90, said: “He was an honest person and always helpful.
“He never had a bad word for anybody. He was a very thoughtful man. He was a well-liked man.
"I can't believe how many people knew him. He loved his job, he really did.
"He was always talking to people and popping into the shops. He did a good job".
Mr Howes' cousin Jane Saunders, aged 72, added: “He will be sadly missed because he was loved by all.
“He was a popular character in Stourport – a very jolly lad. He was very helpful to folks".
The family said all friends who knew Mr Howes are welcome to attend the funeral next week.
