TRIBUTES have been pouring in for a beloved white tiger who has died at West Midlands Safari Park.

Keepers at the safari park have paid their goodbyes to Ben the tiger, who was nearly 20 years old.

One of the tiger's eyes had to be removed in 2022 after a malignant melanoma was found, with Ben making a recovery.

The Bewdley attraction said he had "slowed down" recently and age-related issues "caught up with him".

In a statement on Facebook, West Midlands Safari Park said: "At almost 20 years of age, we have sadly had to say our goodbyes to our white tiger, Ben.

"For him to reach such a great age shows what excellent care he has received from our veterinary team and keepers. In 2022, a malignant melanoma was found on his right eyelid, which meant that this, along with his eye, were removed.

"Despite this, he made a fantastic recovery and was a well-known character with all our guests.

"However, of late, we had noticed he had slowed down, and age-related health issues had finally caught up with him.

"He will be deeply missed by all who have cared for him over the years".

Kasha Carter, head of carnivores at the safari park, said: "Ben has been a long-time favourite with guests and staff at West Midlands Safari Park and he will be sorely missed.

"He was reared by his mum Tikva, in a litter of four, born on 4th October 2004. We knew him to be a playful and feisty character who enjoyed chasing the Park vehicles, knowing that food was on its way.

"In later years, he loved his creature comforts of a thick straw bed and his heat lamp. He is survived by his brother Buster, from a later litter, who can still be seen by guests on our Safari Drive. For anyone who has lost an animal they love, they appreciate this is a difficult time and we are touched by the support of our guests and their memories of him."

The safari park encouraged guests to share their memories and photos of Ben.

Sarah Smith said: "Sad news, Ben was a gorgeous boy and one of our favourites when we visited. RIP Ben. Sending hugs to all who cared for him".
