MORE than 450 people attended Bewdley Dementia Awareness Day, with almost £1,000 raised for the Bewdley Dementia Support Group.

The event was held at Bewdley Museum and Jubilee Gardens on Sunday, August 16, bringing together residents and visitors for a day of activities aimed at raising awareness and supporting the charity.

One of the highlights was a simultaneous chess challenge led by Jonathan Swindells, described as Worcestershire’s highest-ranked chess player.

Mr Swindells played 12 opponents at once, taking on players of different ages and abilities.

He won nine matches, drew two and lost one.

Mike Charlton was the only player to beat Mr Swindells, while John Wrench and John Varilone earned hard-fought draws.

Organisers said the result was a contrast to the previous year’s challenge, when Mr Swindells won all of his games.

They said competitors appeared better prepared this time, making the challenge a closely contested and entertaining feature of the day.

Young people were among those taking part in the chess event, with visitors also given the opportunity to try other strategy games.

Organisers thanked Mr Swindells for giving his time and praised everyone who attended, contributed and supported the fundraising effort.
