A NEW campaign is calling on residents to help build a more welcoming community.

Wyre Forest Welcomes Refugees has launched 100 Acts of Welcome, an appeal for volunteers to support refugees and people seeking sanctuary across the district.

The group is looking for people to offer regular help or occasional support with specific activities and events.

A spokesperson for Wyre Forest Welcomes Refugees said: "We know there are many people across Wyre Forest who want to do something positive in their community, and we’d love to hear from them.

"Whether someone can volunteer regularly, help at a particular activity or offer their time occasionally, every contribution matters.

"Sometimes it can be as simple as having a conversation, helping someone practise their English or offering a lift.

"These small acts of welcome can make a huge difference to someone who is new to the area."

Volunteers are not required to have specialist knowledge or qualifications.

Full guidance and support will be provided, and roles can be matched to each person’s interests, skills and availability.

The campaign also aims to show the positive impact of community support, especially during a time of divisive public debate about refugees and asylum seekers.

The spokesperson said: "This isn't about asking people to be experts or getting involved in political arguments.

"It’s about people meeting people, helping where they can and making our local community stronger.

"We hope 100 Acts of Welcome will encourage people to come forward and discover just how rewarding volunteering can be."

The group currently assists refugee families and individuals in Wyre Forest with English language support, a weekly drop-in café, befriending, and practical help with school, doctors registrations and community activities.
