A man based in Worcestershire who rediscovered his passion after 'giving up racing altogether' is on the verge of championship success.

Cofton Hackett-based Paul Mousell, 47, gave up racing after 'not having the funds' to move into professional car racing, off the back of finishing runner-up in the British Kart Championships when he was a teenager.

Despite giving up his racing dreams in his younger years, two years ago Paul decided to take up racing again as a hobby and compete in the 'highly competitive' BMW Compact Cup, which features BMW Compact 3 Series cars.

In his first season of racing, Paul finished sixth in the championship with six victories in the Masters class for racers aged over 45.

Fast forward to the present, and Paul is on the verge of racing success once again, needing only a 5th-place finish in the first race of three in the final round of the BMW Compact Cup at Brands Hatch to be crowned champion.

"Having never actually raced a car in my life two years ago, going into my second full season of racing, did I for one second have winning the championship on my mind? Absolutely not," Paul said.

"It is a very competitive series.

"My target was to win the Master's class and to get some overall podiums, so to be in the position is amazing.

"There a guys I am racing against with years and years of experience over me."

Ahead of the final round of the BMW Compact Cup in October and his potential coronation as champion, Paul was keen to thank his sponsors for their support.

He said: "I must give credit to my sponsors, Antinox Surface Protection and local businesses, Rednal Tyres and Venture Body Repairs, for all their support.

"It is a very expensive hobby, so any help and support you are able to get is hugely appreciated."
