A KIDDERMINSTER chess player has taken home seven trophies after a successful season for one of the country’s oldest chess clubs.
Joe Friar, 27, led the winners at Kidderminster Chess Club after triumphing across a range of competitions and different formats of the game.
He won the Club Championship, Shuttle Shield, Lightning, Quick Play, Handicap, Graham Bunn Trophy and President’s Cup.
The seven-trophy haul saw Mr Friar succeed in competitions ranging from the club’s main championship to faster forms of chess and handicap contests.
Other members were also recognised, with Jon Francis winning the Minor Club Championship.
Brandon Wilkes received the Clive Billinge Trophy in recognition of his commitment to the club.
There was team success too, as Kidderminster Chess Club’s Division Two side won the Worcestershire Rapid Play League for the second consecutive year.
The team was led by its 16-year-old captain Cameron Henry.
John Wrench, president of Kidderminster Chess Club, said: “It has been another tremendous chess season for the club, with so many well-deserved winners and some extremely strong performances in leagues across the region.
“Joseph continues to be an inspiration to everyone at the club and one of Worcestershire’s leading players.
“We’re also extremely proud of Jon, Brandon and Cameron for their achievements this season.”
Mr Wrench said the club had been particularly encouraged by the arrival of new members during the year, ranging from juniors and beginners to more experienced chess players.
He added: “We look forward to matching or exceeding our successes in the coming season.”
Founded in 1845, Kidderminster Chess Club is one of the oldest chess clubs in the UK.
Members meet at Kidderminster Harriers Social Club from 7pm every Monday and new players are welcome.
