AN MP has said that a potential new bridge and relief road in Stourport would be the 'jewel in the crown' in Wyre Forest.

Speaking in a debate at Westminster Hall on Tuesday (October 13), Conservative MP for Wyre Forest Mark Garnier raised the need for a Stourport relief road and a new bridge over the River Severn.

After the debate, Mr Garnier elaborated on his comment in Westminster Hall, saying that a new bridge over the River Severn that could potentially link the Bewdley bypass via the Worcester Road, through to the Kidderminster road would be the 'jewel in the crown' in Wyre Forest.

To justify the potential improvement works in Stourport, Mr Garnier pointed to previous successes, namely the Hoo Brook link road coupled with a new station, flood defences, and town centre renewal.

In a statement sent to the Shuttle, Mr Garnier said: “This is something that goes back a long way.

There are plans that were drawn up in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

“The problem they try to solve is that too many people in Stourport are trying to get somewhere else.

“In the same way that Bewdley has a bypass and a bridge, Stourport needs the same.

“I’ve been campaigning on this for years, and it is now more important than ever given the housing being built in both Wyre Forest and West Worcs and Malvern Hills.

“I held a debate on this earlier in the year and will keep up the pressure.

“We’ve had successes in Wyre Forest - Hoo Brook link road, new station, flood defences, town centre renewal and more.

“But the jewel in the crown would be a new bridge over the Severn south of Stourport, that could potentially link the Bewdley bypass via the Worcester Road, through to the Kidderminster Road.”
