A 'determined' police dog has helped to locate a vulnerable young person who ran away from staff at a school in Kidderminster.

The incident took place on Wednesday, November 4, afternoon and involved a vulnerable young person running away from staff at a school in Kidderminster and into a nearby woodland.

Despite searches by West Mercia Police and school staff, the person could not be located, and concerns for their welfare were increasing as darkness fell.

This led to PC Surridge and Police Dog (PD) John from the West Mercia Police Dog Unit being drafted in to assist the search efforts.

After joining the search and walking through the woodland, PD John alerted to movement in the distance before picking up a scent and leading his handler through undergrowth and brambles.

After what West Mercia Police have described as a 'determined' search, PD John indicated in an area hidden by ferns and foliage.

Although the person could not be seen, PD John was 'certain they were there', with the vulnerable individual being located safe and well shortly after.

A West Mercia Police Dog Unit spokesperson said: "A fantastic example of a police dog's remarkable abilities, with PD John's nose once again proving far superior to his handler's eyes.

"Well done to PD John and PC Surridge on a great result."
