PUPILS at a Stourport school are making waves with a 24-hour radio show.

All the children at Lickhill Primary School have been involved in the eight-day project, which runs until midnight on Saturday.

Headteacher, Calne Edginton-White, said the launch of Lickhill Radio followed the success of their school lunchtime radio shows, which they had been running for the past year.

She explained the aim of the project was to develop the children’s speaking and listening skills, improve their awareness of community and give them a chance to experience real broadcasting.

She added: “It’s been a fantastic success and all the children are really enjoying it. It has involved the whole community and has really put Lickhill on the map.”

Mrs Edginton-White said that the children – led by year six pupils – were planning and researching stories, responding to requests and thinking about how to entertain a wider audience.

She explained that pupils of all ages were working together to produce the shows and that they were really “sparking the imagination” of parents, pupils of other schools and residents.

She added: “They are learning to empathise with other people, appreciate the wider community and collaborate and take turns with others.”

Mrs Edginton-White said the pupils had been conducting interviews with figures such as local artists and the Stourport Carnival queen.

They have also designed competitions such as guessing the name and artist of a music track.

In addition, pupils have been involved in discussions on issues such as climate change, as well as producing sports reports.

Mrs Edginton-White said: “It has been really exciting for them. They never know what is coming next and they are getting a feeling for a very broad audience out there listening.”

She added that many pupils were now interested in pursuing broadcasting as a career and that they had been been really motivated by the project.

The pupils are being helped on a technical level by Mrs Edginton-White’s son, Ben, 19, but are working independently much of the time.

The station is currently being broadcast on 101.4FM in Stourport and worldwide online at lickhillradio.co.uk
