A KIDDERMINSTER couple who “hit it off” on a blind date more than 50 years ago have toasted their golden wedding anniversary.

John and Edna Molyneux dated for two-and-a-half years before they tied the knot at Kidderminster’s St Mary’s Church on September 20, 1958.

The couple, of Franche Road, went on to have two daughters and three grandsons and celebrated their milestone with a family party and a meal.

Mrs Molyneux said: “John and I were both friends with a couple who asked us to go out on a date with them as a foursome.

“We hit it off straight away. I’m really glad that I went along.

“I used to say to John, ‘I will see you in a week’ and then it grew that we would see each other every day, then we got engaged.

“Our wedding day was lovely, despite the fact that it rained on us.

“We had the reception at Franche Village Hall and the sun came out.”

The 69-year-old, who worked as a cook at John Baynham Nursing Home, added that the secret to a happy marriage was to never go to bed on an argument.

“We have always looked after each other and have always got on,” she added.

““We have fallen out at times but we always make it up.

“I think if you don’t fall out it’s a boring marriage. We have a sense of humour about things.”

Before retirement, Mr Molyneux, 73, a member of Kidderminster Carolians Rugby Club, worked as a mechanic at the former Edward Brothers Mechanics.
