FUND-raising “prisoners” at a Cleobury Mortimer pub are planning an escape route to Birmingham – but need help from Shuttle readers.

A sponsored “jailbreak” is being held at the King’s Arms at 10am next Friday, where teams of inmates, dressed in pink, have to get as far away as possible and back in eight hours without paying for transport.

The pub’s co-owner, Shadia Smith, hopes her group will reach Birmingham and is asking for ideas from members of the public.

All cash raised goes to the Wear it Pink campaign, funding breast cancer research, as Wendy Harding, a former member of staff at the pub, died earlier this year after battling the disease.

Mrs Smith said: “We’re open to any methods of transport, the more unusual the better.

“We’ll even get in a wheelbarrow and people can push us for part of the way.

“We’re hoping the Severn Valley Railway will get us into Kidderminster, so we just need some free transport from there.”

The team plan to collect money around Birmingham city centre before returning to the village for 6pm.

Prizes are available for the most interesting destination, most inventive form of transport, most sponsorship money raised and best fancy dress.

The jailbreak is the latest in a series of events staged by the pub including a quiz, a conker championship and salsa classes, with more than £8,000 being donated to the charity.

“It shows the community is very strong – everybody here is doing something for the campaign,” Mrs Smith explained.

Anyone who can help with transport for the event or would like to enter a team should call Mrs Smith on 07720 033465.
