A WYRE Forest woman successfully delivered her granddaughter in a Wolverley pub car park during an eventful journey to the hospital.

Dawn Barker, 42, of Caunsall, sprang into action when her 20-year-old daughter, Stacey Barker, alerted her that the baby was due.

She had already taken Stacey to Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley at about 2am but had been told to return her home while she was in the early stages of labour.

Miss Barker said she got the call later in the morning that the baby was on the way and drove to her daughter’s home in Stourport.

She said: “We were in the car and I was driving towards Wolverley and Stacey said that she needed to start pushing. I thought to myself, ‘Oh my god’.

“There were cars coming in and out of the Wolverley Surgery, so I drove to The Lock Inn car park, which is often used as an ambulance base.

“When I got there, there was no ambulance around and I quickly got out of my car. I ran around to see if Stacey was OK and the baby’s head was there.”

The mother-of-five added: “I just delivered the baby. I had no choice. The baby was there and she wasn’t going to wait. I am still coming down from the shock of it. Everything happened so quickly.”

She explained: “I was trying to stay calm for Stacey. She kept saying, ‘Is the baby OK?, is the baby OK?’ and I kept saying, ‘Yes, everything is fine’.

“I have never done anything like that before. It was a lovely experience but one time is enough, I think.”

A healthy 6lbs 6ozs baby girl named Ellie was born at 9.13am on November 5.

Ambulances arrived and removed the placenta from Ellie before taking the three of them to Russell Halls Hospital.

Stacey, of Broomy Close, said: “I knew what was happening and what to expect from the birth of my first child [three-year-old Tyler].

“From the pain, I knew she was close and I probably wouldn’t make it to the hospital.

“I was scared but in the end it was painless and it happened very quickly. I am really grateful my mum was there. She really made me feel better.”

She added: “I am just glad it is all over and happy Ellie is here and everything is alright.”

Ellie is Miss Barker’s second grandchild and has the Lock Inn, Wolverley, registered as her place of birth on her birth certificate.

Andrew Bishop, Lock landlord, said: “This was fantastic news. There is always something going on around here but that was a little different from the norm.”
