PARENTS are parking dangerously at Kidderminster schools when dropping off and picking up children, according to a campaigner.

Steven Walker, of Windsor Drive, Kidderminster, said the situation in Broadwaters around St George’s CE Primary School and St Oswald's CE Primary School was often “horrendous”.

He explained that the parking at the junction of Booton Court and Sion Avenue was particularly hazardous because of the narrowness of the roads in the area.

He added that since Sion Avenue had been resurfaced, Worcestershire County Council had failed to put back road markings prohibiting dangerous parking.

Mr Walker, a Conservative campaigner, said: “This matter is urgently in need of ratification and cannot be ignored any longer. It is hazardous and very dangerous for all concerned and I hope [county] highways will get this matter sorted quickly.”

He added that in Plane Tree Close and surrounding roads, parents were ignoring road markings and parking on the ‘keep clear’ zigzags, blocking residents’ drives.

He explained that the issues were causing frustration and anger to residents and although signs had been put up on lamp posts asking for co-operation they were being ignored.

Mr Walker said: “Parking is a problem at most schools and even though Wyre Forest District Council civil enforcement officers make regular patrols of all schools to ensure parking is legal and is safe for everyone, including those children walking to school, it needs to be increased around the schools during drop-off and pick-up times.”

Conservative Derek Prodger, the county council's cabinet member for transport and safe environment, said some of the road markings were no longer deemed “appropriate” in Sion Avenue.

He added: “However, we always encourage people to highlight to us where they feel improvements could be made and I will ensure they are fully investigated."

Conservative Tracey Onslow, Wyre Forest District Council’s cabinet member for housing and environmental services, added: "Our officers attend every school at the appropriate times and carry out a range of measures to tackle this issue, including advice and ticketing cars parked on double yellow lines.

“All Wyre Forest schools are visited on a rotational basis and so St Oswald’s and St George’s will be visited as part of this rota.

“We would urge all parents - if they must drive their children to school - to park appropriately and consider local residents.”
