FOOTBALL’S Championship trophy took pride of place at a Kidderminster school as part of a farewell tour with the famous silverware by Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

Coca Cola Football League Championship winners, Wolves, chose King Charles I School because an ex-pupil remembered her former headteacher, Tim Gulliver, was an avid fan.

Colin Harris, teacher, explained: “One of our ex-pupils, Laura Price, works in their marketing department and knowing that our headteacher, was a lifelong supporter and season-ticket holder, contacted him.

“Mr Gulliver was very excited and had a picture taken of himself next to the trophy, with his young son.”

Mr Harris said there was a strong Wolves following at the school and pupils came dressed in the club’s kit for the day and had their photos taken with the historic trophy.

He explained that The Championship trophy was the old First Division trophy - now the Premier League - and was more than 100 years old.

He added that it could not be touched without wearing rubber gloves and was guarded by security.

Mr Harris said that in the afternoon, the whole school took part in the Sport Relief Mile on both the lower school field and upper school site.

Wolves won promotion to the Premier League on April 18, 2009 and were crowned champions the following weekend.

The team were presented with the trophy on May 3, 2009, in front of a sell-out Molineux crowd. The club previously won the trophy in 1959.
