A MAN has hit out at a Kidderminster supermarket for its lack of security cameras after his car was stolen from its car park.

Mark Wright parked his Ford Sierra car at Sainsbury’s, in Crossley Retail Park, at about 7.30pm, on Friday, March 19 but when he returned after 30 minutes it had gone.

The 55-year-old, of Sion Avenue, said he paced up and down the car park looking for his vehicle, as he thought he had forgotten where it was parked.

He explained that when he realised it had been stolen he reported it to police and later discovered the store had no CCTV cameras.

A spokesman for the supermarket giant, however, said that parts of the car park were covered by CCTV and were “well lit”.

But Mr Wright has now hit out at Sainsbury’s for what he says is a lack of action on security.

He said that he was disappointed with the store, as he believed the cameras could have helped the police gather vital clues and deterred the thieves.

“When I went back to the car park and I didn’t see my car I thought ‘that’s strange’,” he explained. “I was absolutely gobsmacked when they told me they had no CCTV. I’m flabbergasted. It’s not very helpful for the customer. What happens if a young girl gets assaulted on the car park? You would expect a major store to upgrade its security systems. What’s to stop people using the car park as a rendezvous point for drugs or something?

“It’s very irresponsible of Sainsbury’s to not have any cameras in its car park.”

A Sainsbury’s spokesman said: “It is important to remember that incidents like this are very rare.

“Parts of the car park are covered by CCTV and we take great steps to ensure that it is well lit. We also work very closely with the local police, who regularly patrol the car park.”

A police spokeswoman confirmed that Mr Wright’s car had been stolen and added that no-one had been arrested in connection with the incident.
