TEAM-mates of a teenage biking ace who was paralysed in an accident are uniting to support his recovery.

Callum Loveridge, 16, broke four bones in his neck and severed his spinal chord after a BMX stunt went wrong in February.

His team, Wilden Motorcross, is staging an auction and a sponsored walk to help Callum’s parents, Ade and Kim, get equipment and modifications for their home.

The events take place at Wilden Moto Park, Wilden Lane, on Saturday and Sunday.

Tom Arnold, a member of the club, said: “Everybody loves Callum - a lot of people are heartbroken over what’s happened.

“He was one of the best riders at the club. Because he’s one of our own we wanted to help him.”

Callum, of Norton, near Stourbridge, was injured on February 15 and is set to spend up to 16 months at a specialist spinal unit in Oswestry.

When he began his recovery in the intensive care unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, his family were told he only has a slim chance of being able to walk again and regaining the use of his arms.

His father, Ade, said: “His feet slipped off the pedals when he was upside down, because this happened so quickly he was unable to put his arms out for protection resulting in him landing head first on the ground.

“We are devastated by Callum’s accident but because he is so brave and strong it is making us stronger.”

A campaign called Stay Strong Callum has been started, in the hope of raising thousands of pounds for the youngster. A website was set up, cal4u.co.uk, with an email , staystrong@cal4u.co.uk, as a point of contact for anyone wishing to help.

Biking championship shirts, a BMX, free meals at pubs and tickets to West Midland SafarI Park are just some of the items donated for the auction this weekend.

Mr Loveridge said: “Both Kim and myself are so overwhelmed by the support from friends and people we don’t really know, their help will be so important to Callum’s future.”
