CHARITY volunteers pushed shopping trolleys for a gruelling 13 miles to raise cash for abandoned dogs.

Staff at Happy Staffie Rescue in Kidderminster took on the challenge as part of a month-long fund-raising campaigning.

They collected more than £200-worth of dog food, toys and treats and have so far received £140 in sponsorship.

Mark Hannaford, Happy Staffie store manager, said: “It was great to see so many well wishes along the route and they kept up moving. We also received a lot of donations along the way.”

The route stretched from Kidderminster’s Co-op to the charity’s kennels in Neen Sollars, near Cleobury Mortimer.

The team made their way through Bewdley, stopping for a drink next to the River Severn before tackling the steep hill into Far Forest.

“The pavements were very small and full of lumps, bumps and sticks which meant it was very hard work to keep the trolleys going and not tip over,” Mr Hannaford explained.

When the volunteers reached the finishing line at 4.30pm, six hours after they had set out, they were greeted with cheers from the kennel staff.

“Our finishing point couldn't come quick enough, with so many steep hills along the way it seem an impossible task to finish but the team were not going to let it beat them,” Mr Hannaford went.

The Get Wacky for a Staffie campaign has so far seen one of the charity’s founders, Donna Morgan, raise £350 by having her head shaved.

Happy Staffie Rescue was set up last June to help re-home Staffordshire bull terriers in Wyre Forest. The money raised will help keep the charity running and looking after more dogs.
