A WOMAN and three-year-old child had a lucky escape after a car overturned at a busy Kidderminster junction.

The silver Vauxhall Frontera went into a hedge on the St Mary's Ring Road at the junction with Crossley Retail Park on Tuesday.

Fire and ambulance crews, the air ambulance and police attended the scene, which left a large section of the ring road closed for around two hours from just after 9.50am.

The woman, who was initially trapped, was released by fire crew and paramedics.

She was taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital, suffering from back pain and cuts to her head. The child was treated at the scene for minor scratches but did not need hospital treatment.

The incident has prompted calls for action on a busy stretch of road which saw the death of lorry driver, Gregory Painter, from Kingswinford, in June, 2004.

Oliver Stockley, an employee of Community, part of the Carpets Weavers Union, said: "This is the third accident I've known to happen on this stretch of road. With a road like this you'd think the barriers would be reinforced."

County councillor, Paul Mills, responsible for the St Mary's division, said: "It isn't a great situation there and something needs to be done. I'll be looking into the matter."

The 36-year-old driver of the vehicle received slight scratches and bruises but remained in Worcestershire Royal Hospital yesterday after being admitted for treatment for back pain.
