SCHOOL pupils have cooked up a treat in aid of a hospice for people with life-limiting illnesses.

Form one day pupils at Abberley Hall School baked cakes at home while boarders cooked in the school kitchen.

Almost 40 eight and nine-year-olds were involved in the Big Bake and set up a stand in the school courtyard.

Cakes were bought by staff and pupils as were raffle tickets to win a specially baked cake with Worcester-based St Richard’s Hospice’s snowdrop logo iced on it.

Brothers George and Edward Battin, whose late mother was cared for by the hospice, gave a powerpoint presentation to the rest of the school on the charity. The children raised £274 from the cake sale.

Sally Duckham, form one teacher, said: “This was a cause close to the heart of several pupils and the whole event was organised by the children themselves. They did a fantastic job and we are really proud of them.”

St Richard’s Hospice provides specialist palliative care for patients living with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses in a day hospice, a 16-bed in-patient unit or in their homes by a specialist professional team and trained volunteers.

The hospice team supports more than 2,100 patients and family members in Worcestershire.

A new Snowdrops Community Care Centre will allow St Richard’s to expand its services across the community.

It will allow the home care team of nurses, hospice at home carers and the family support eam to help more people and meet the increasing demand for care in the community.
