Our October speaker, Mrs Sylvia Jackett, spoke movingly under the title 'Life is Good' about her experiences as a recipient of a kidney and pancreas double organ transplant. Her journey began in 1978 when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes which affected her eyesight, led to renal failure and septicaemia resulting in her having an amputation of her left leg below the knee amongst many other complications. Sylvia's strength of character was portrayed as she faced adversity and incredibly retained her sense of humour. Having kidney dialysis for 4 hours at a time, 3 times a week with the same people has given her a close group of friends who exchanged laughter, tears and bravery. They even had their own Chocolate Club.

After four unsuccessful transplant opportunities, it was in November 2008 that she received the two organs and has made a full recovery. As Sylvia said: 'This has given me a new lease of life and a second chance that I never thought I would get.' She paid tribute to the family of the donor who gave her such a special gift and feels not only overwhelming gratitude but some responsibility to look after these organs and herself. Sylvia made a plea to everyone to make sure they are on the Donor Register as organs are so desperately needed. The Club presented her with a small donation towards her fundraising for the Kidney Dialysis Unit at Cardiff University Hospital.

Our Supper and Speaker Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month (except August) and visitors and guests are always welcome.
