ALTHOUGH burglary remains relatively low in West Mercia and less than one per cent of homes are burgled each year, the NWCSP is taking the opportunity to remind householders of the need to consider their home security, especially if they are planning to go away.

This time of year sees thieves looking for homes which look empty. The advice is simple but an area that we feel needs attention. The distress that is caused from a burglary at home is the last thing you need, especially when you return from a holiday.

The good news is that there are things you can do to improve your home security. Most burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves rather than ‘professional’ criminals who are looking for the easiest way of getting into a house without being seen or disturbed.

If you can close off these opportunities, you are much less likely to be burgled. To reduce the risk of a burglary while you are away, please: l Close and lock all windows, doors, gates, garages and sheds.

  • Remove any ladders or bins that could be used to access your home.
  • Set the alarm system.
  • Property mark your valuables (eg laptops) and make the details visible to the police by registering them free of charge on Immobilise – http://www.immobilise.com.
  • Download free tracking software for all your electronic equipment at http://preyproject.com.
  • Make arrangements for your post and cancel deliveries. l Ask someone you trust to keep an eye on your home and even park on your drive (be prepared to return the favour!). l Invest in some timer switches to switch on lights and/or radio.
  • Keep keys out of sight and away from cat flaps.
