I recently wrote to complain about parking in Severn Side, Bewdley.

From information gathered through the recent PACT meeting in the town, it is clear that I was wrong to do so, and I wish to apologise on two counts.

First, the gap in the yellow lines at the civic space is there because it was the wish of the council that the area should be left unrestricted.

Accordingly any of us may park there free 24 hours a day without penalty.

This will obviously be helpful to residents if the 24-hour limitation on paid parking permits is enforced.

Second, the police do not deal with yellow line offences.

These powers now rest with the local authority.

Their enforcement officers operate only from 8am to 9pm.

This means that provided we do not cause an obstruction, any of us can park for free anywhere we like on yellow lines for 11 hours a day.

Again this will be useful to residents if paid parking becomes time limited.

So my apologies for implying that those motorists and motorcyclists who use our civic spaces and promenades as free car parks are in any way antisocial or selfish.

You were right all along: you not only own the road, but the footpaths as well.

You are also an example to us all.
