HISTORIC Black Country brewer Bathams is getting set to launch its 11th pub in the Midlands - thanks to help from a fellow long-running family firm.

The award-winning real ale company has acquired two former office blocks in Hagley, Worcestershire, which are being converted into a new bar.

Higgs & Sons put together a team headed up by commercial property partner Richard Saxton, corporate partner Richard Griffiths and commercial solicitor Katie Doyle to help the brewing company secure the right premises and an alcohol licence.

Mr Saxton said: “We acted for Bathams in acquiring the property as a speculative pub development, and naturally I am delighted to see the project now come to fruition.

“It is an excellent result in securing this prime site, and positive news in the current climate of pub closures.

"Everyone involved worked incredibly hard to ensure this outcome and what will be the delivery of another thriving business and focal point for the community.”

Katie added: “Bathams is a long-standing client of ours and we are pleased to have supported them with their new venture. The application for the new premises licence was submitted earlier this year and was granted following a licensing committee hearing following a number of representations.”

Higgs & Sons and Bathams share a similar heritage; both are family firms, headquartered in Brierley Hill and with long histories. The legal firm celebrated its 140th anniversary in 2015 and Bathams is set to celebrate its 140th anniversary later this year.

Pub company director Matthew Batham said: “Higgs & Sons has proved to be a long-standing champion of not only our business but our heritage, understanding the importance of our traditional background to our identity."

Building work is already underway at the Worcester Road premises which are scheduled to open in September.
