KINGSFORD Lane Country Park next to Kinver Edge is to have more than 300 extra ash, beech and spruce trees as part of a global scheme by the Rotary movement to plant more than 1.2 million trees across the continents – one for each member of the organisation.

Although the Rotary Club of Kinver has a membership of 45 the club has agreed with the National Trust to plant 300 of the broadleaved species as part of the Trust’s Woodland Trust initiative.

The original idea from Rotary International’s current president was designed to increase worldwide recognition of the movement while also making a significant contribution to the green environment of the planet.

The club has gained the support of Kinver's Brindley Heath Junior School and is currently compiling a planting scheme which will see National Trust volunteers demonstrating planting techniques to the school pupils.

Club spokesman Mike Deathridge said South Staffordshire MP Gavin Williamson, the government's Defence Secretary, has expressed his support for the project and he is expected to pick up a spade at one of the planting days.

The cost of the trees has been taken from the funds put aside for a worthy cause following a charity garden party at the home of a friend of the Kinver club in 2016.
