A NEW leader of Wychavon District Council has been appointed.

Councillor Bradley Thomas was elected to the role at a council meeting last Wednesday (November 7).

The election took place after Councillor Linda Robinson, the first woman to lead the authority, announced she was stepping down.

Cllr Thomas, who was first elected to Wychavon in 2014, will remain at the helm until district elections in May 2019. He will also retain responsibility for planning, transport and infrastructure.

Cllr Thomas said: “I’m pleased and very grateful for the support of the whole council and the confidence they have shown in me. We’re able to move forward now and build on the good work Wychavon is known for and has taken place over the last few years in particular. I’d like to pay tribute to Cllr Robinson as under her leadership Wychavon has gone from strength-to-strength and she can be proud of her record.

“My priority will be to ensure we continue to strengthen our delivery on our key priorities of people, place and prosperity. That means a renewed focus on issues such as bringing more empty homes back into use and delivering more affordable homes so people have a home to live in. It means continuing to use New Homes Bonus Money to invest in our communities and supporting our local economy through outside investment.

“Ensuring the public are fully involved in the current review of the South Worcestershire Development Plan is also a key focus for me. We need to ensure the new revised plan delivers the jobs and sustainable communities we need.”

Cllr Thomas has also appointed his new executive board to support him which includes Councillor Richard Morris, deputy leader and board member for economic growth and tourism, Councillor Ron Davis, board member for resources and investment, Councillor Gerry O’Donnell, board member for housing, health and wellbeing, Councillor Emma Stokes, board member for environment, recycling and street scene and Councillor Rob Adams, board member for community engagement, culture and sport.

Cllr Thomas added: “I’m confident that with the team I’ve appointed Wychavon is well positioned to deliver on our priorities and capitalise on new opportunities.”
