MP Harriett Baldwin says she backs Prime Minister Theresa May to carry on and negotiate a deal with the European Union, after a historical defeat for the government.

The UK’s withdrawal agreement with the European Union was rejected by 230 votes in the worse defeat for a sitting government in Parliamentary history.

And after the big defeat Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn called a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Theresa May's government. But that Commons vote - that could pave the way for a general election if passed - looks set to be defeated this evening after Conservative and DUP MPs said they would back the government.

Ahead of the vote the West Worcestershire MP offered her support to the PM.

“I have supported the Prime Minister as she attempts to negotiate a deal to leave the European Union. The withdrawal agreement, in my view, remains the best solution for delivering this," the MP said.

“Those who voted against the withdrawal agreement need to now say what they would agree to and the government stands ready to listen.

“I have always said that my constituents want certainty – especially the businesses who trade with Europe – and I hope that the government will work swiftly to resolve this issue.

“The Prime Minister has my full support and I look forward to her winning tonight’s vote of confidence. A general election is not in the national interest and the public simply want us to get on with the process of an orderly exit from the European Union.”

Worcester's MP and Brexit minister Robin Walker said: "We now need to find something parliament will get behind, and move on to a trade deal.

"This can be resolved. We are clear we are leaving on March 29.

“People say we are now in uncharted waters, but when the result of the referendum was announced we went into uncharted waters.

“The vote of confidence is a distraction, it is not going to make a difference."
