DETAILED plans for a housing development on land off Lower Howsell Road in Malvern Link have been given the green light.

As a meeting on Wednesday, members of Malvern Hills District Council's southern area planning committee voted unanimously to approve the application, by Bellway Homes Ltd, for 110 homes, 40 per cent of them to be affordable, on a former allotment site.

Outline permission for the development was granted in 2016 on appeal.

A separate application, for a second access off Lower Howsell Road to serve five of these homes, was also approved by 15 votes to three, in spite of objections from residents worried about another access on the the already busy road.

Cllr David Watkins, who represents the Link, asked for the application to be deferred, but this suggestion was not taken up by other committee members.

The application attracted objections from residents of Vandra Close, on the boundary of the site, who were worried that the emergency access onto their road would lead to residents parking in their close and walking to and from their homes.

Cllr Watkins said: "It's really good that we're seeing 40 per cent affordable housing in this application. It's great that the 40 per cent figure is part of the deal."

But he said he was worried about the design of the houses, not only in this application, but others sent to the council in recent times.

"How long are we going to see these little boxes? There's no individuality," he said.
