WORCESTER MP Robin Walker has said House of Commons Speaker John Bercow's announcement that the EU Withdrawal Agreement cannot be brought back before MPs has "complicated matters".
On Monday, the Speaker ruled that Prime Minister Theresa May cannot bring the agreement back before MPs unless it is substantially different from the package that was decisively defeated last week.
The speaker's ruling was announced in an unexpected statement to the Commons, and is a major blow to the PM and her government. It also opens up the door to a possible extension to Brexit, that is scheduled to take place a week on Friday, March 29.
However Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay has suggested MPs could "find a way" to get another vote on the deal in the Commons, with that third vote taking place next week.
Robin Walker, city MP and Brexit minister, said: "I think (the Speaker's announcement) complicates matters in the very short term but I still think the likelihood is that the deal will come back.
"It would be better to get the deal with a short technical extension to get it through than either to have a long extension or to leave without a deal."
