A DAD said his teenage son is “one lucky lad” having been released from intensive care days after being struck by a car.

Brian Robins understands his son Ryan, 13, was clipped by a car’s wing mirror as he walked towards Holt Fleet Bridge with friends on Sunday afternoon.

He said the boy is “doing very well” and was released into a regular ward at Birmingham Children’s Hospital this morning.

The police shared a dramatic image across social media of an air ambulance making a tricky take off from the bridge over the River Severn following the incident.

Mr Robins said his son has a hairline fracture to the skull and bruising to the brain, as well as a right shoulder fracture and lots of other cuts and bruises.

“He knows we are there, and he does know he’s in hospital, which are all good signs,” said Ryan’s dad. “He wakes up for a couple of minutes at a time.”

Asked if there’s been any indication when his son might be able to come out of hospital, Mr Robins said: “We are expecting a couple of weeks, but no-one really knows.

“It’s been a tough couple of days to say the least,” he added.

Mr Robins and his partner Michelle had taken Ryan and sister Sarah-Lou to Holt Fleet Farm Caravan Park for the weekend, as they often do, travelling down from Rowley Regis.

The family were heading towards the bridge on foot to get back to the site when Ryan was met by some friends, though the family carried on to their caravan.

Mr Robins said the first he knew of the crash when his son’s friend came “running over the bridge” to tell the family.

He understands that Ryan was on a narrow footpath opposite the bridge when the accident occurred.

The road from Ombersley to the Holt Fleet island was closed in both directions while a Midlands Air Ambulance landed and took Ryan to hospital.

A spokesman for Midlands Ambulance Service said the emergency call was made at 4.44pm and two ambulances and a paramedic officer were sent to the scene as well as the air ambulance.

There was a doctor onboard the helicopter, which took Ryan to hospital at 6.02pm after he had been given trauma care at the scene.

“Hats off to the air ambulance, paramedics and police,” said Mr Robins.

The police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or has any dashcam footage.

The car involved in the collision was a maroon Mini Cooper and was approaching Holt from Ombersley on the westbound A4133.
