MORE than 4,000 Scouts converged on Malvern’s Three Counties Showground for the inaugural ‘Shirejam’ event.

Young people aged six to 18 and more than 1,000 adult volunteers from across the region attended the event celebrating the ‘SkillsForLife’ vision of Scouting.

The event featured six zones - adventure, splash, learn, bounce, create and survive.

During the weekend young people tried out activities ranging from scuba-diving, zorbing and creative craft to climbing, aeroplanes, radio broadcasting and Archery.

Peter Dodman, assistant district commissioner, said: “The weekend delivered an amazing event with a diverse representation of our two counties, many new friendships were formed between young people and also between adult volunteers too.

“We had many dignitaries visit during Shirejam including the Lord- Lieutenants of Worcestershire and Herefordshire, we thank you for your support of Scouting.”

The assistant district commissioner also thanked the event's sponsors PRG UK, Malvern Scaffolding, Three Counties Showground and The Rowlands Trust, National Lottery Community Fund and White Logistics.

He added: “Scouting in Herefordshire and Worcestershire continues to grow, supported by our 2,000 volunteers.

“Demand is also growing and we would love to open up additional Scout groups to meet this demand. Shirejam 2019 has shown the enjoyment and skills that adult volunteers can gain from Scouting and we look forward to welcoming new volunteers enabling us to continue this growth.”
