AN actress got the surprise of a lifetime when her partner appeared on stage during a live performance to propose.

Shane Grant, aged 31, arranged with the director of Worcester Repertory Company, Ben Humphrey, for the show of ‘Pride and (quite a lot of) Prejudice’ to have an alternative ending.

He had organised to propose to his partner, Geneviève Lowe, at The Commandery Gardens, in Sidbury, during the show’s final performance.

Instead of proposing, Charlie asked Genevieve to turn around where Shane was waiting to pop the question in front of the show’s crowd and cast.

Moments after the production came to an end on Sunday (July 14) afternoon, Genevieve was asked to replay the scene where Mr Darcy (played by Charlie Ryan) proposes to her character Elizabeth.

Instead of proposing, Charlie asked Genevieve to turn around where Shane was waiting to pop the question in front of the show’s crowd and cast.

Mr Grant, from Wythall said: “How could I miss out on the opportunity to be able to ask the most amazing person to marry me in such a spectacular setting? And the chance, even if for the briefest of moments to be Geneviève’s Mr Darcy.

“She thinks I was brave for getting up on stage to ask her, I just consider myself lucky that she said yes.”

Miss Lowe, aged 27, said: “It was such a beautiful moment. I couldn’t have imagined a more perfect proposal.

“I was so happy to be surrounded by the loveliest of people, I am so very grateful for everyone at Worcester Rep, and to the audience for helping make the moment so special.”

The play was based loosely on the 1813 romantic novel by Jane Austen.

Mr Humphrey said: “I was absolutely over the moon that the Worcester Repertory was able to play a very small part in such a special moment for one of our company members.

“Genevieve is a spectacular actor who deserves every happiness and the fact that we were able to share in such a special moment was magical.”

A Worcester REP spokesman said: “Everyone agrees that this really was the perfect way to round off one of the most successful Worcester Repertory Company shows at The Commandery to date."
