The late start to the British summer has sent many of us reaching for our passports. If you have plans for a foreign holiday this summer, here are some tips to keep the costs in check.

Coming in at number 10 – save money on car seat and buggy hire by taking your own with you. Several airlines waive the excess baggage here, check your airline’s websites for details.

9. Convert your mobile to a satnav – visit navmii.com for the free app. It lacks some of the whistles and bells of paid for software, but it may be all you need.

8. Another useful free app is Google translate. Available for android and iPhone, it translates written and photographed text in dozens of languages.

7. Be comfortable. Buy ear plugs and neck pillows from your local pound shop, much cheaper than buying at the airport.

6. Buying sun cream? Check the PAO (period after opening) number on last year’s leftovers. Some are effective for up to two years.

5. What will you do on holiday? A quick visit to tripadvisor.co.uk will help. Click on ‘Things to do’ for current information and reviews.

4. Taking your mobile? Check with your current provider for cheaper deals on overseas use, or buy a cheap, unlocked basic phone and buy a local SIM at your holiday destination, perfect for booking restaurants, taxis and so on.

3. Paying by card? Paying in the local currency usually means a better exchange rate.

2. If you’re using a budget airline, remember that you can take food onto the plane, so pack a picnic, but remember no liquids, which includes yoghurt.

1. Always, always, always set your budget, do your research, download apps, book airport parking and car hire before you leave home.

Happy Holiday!
