STOURBRIDGE is set to welcome a much-anticipated new pub.

The team behind long-established family-run wine merchants Nickolls and Perks, in Lower High Street, have revamped the old Moorings Tavern at the bottom of Amblecote High Street and transformed it into a brand new canalside watering hole which is set to open this Saturday (August 10).

Jack Gardener has taken a lead on the new venture which he says Stourbridge has been crying out for.

The 27-year-old was inspired to take on the project after running a boutique lodge in New Zealand and he said: "It's quite a bespoke set up. We've put a lot of effort into the outdoor decking area. It's going to be quite different from your basic pork scratchings vibe.

"I want to focus on delivering quality beer and food - and we're going to be doing vegetarian dishes and full English breakfasts. Breakfast is quite a big passion for me. We've got a decent coffee machine and we're trying to use a lot of quality suppliers."

He added: "It's all fresh food and we'll be looking to get into all the guide books next year."

Following in the footsteps of his great-grandfather (also named Jack) who used to run the waterside venue as a pub many years ago, Jack plans to live on site as the landlord - having taken on much of the renovation work himself.

He said: "I've been here every day doing the work myself for the past year-and-a-half, so it will be nice to just get it open now for the community and for the family.

"I think it's just what Stourbridge has really been screaming out for - a place where people can come and enjoy a little bit of food and a bottle of wine."

The new venture, which will be open seven days a week from 9am to 11pm, will see 15 new jobs created and early next year the plan is to open an upstairs function room for weddings and parties - and guest accommodation further down the line.
