SIR – The BBC recently reported that a banker had left his job to work for Extinction Rebellion.

With reference to the cost of policing recent demonstrations, which was also referred to at the meeting of full council at the Guildhall on October 22, the former banker said: “It sounds like a lot of money [but] another way of putting it is: how much are we going to spend if the government doesn’t take the necessary action to prevent societal collapse due to climate breakdown?”

Some councillors and residents have been annoyed by the disruption caused by an Extinction Rebellion demonstration in Worcester, but the disruption caused by climate breakdown will be much worse. Thankfully, Worcester City Council has accepted that we are facing a climate emergency and is prepared to work with others in the city to achieve carbon neutrality.
